Roly Porter + Paul Jebanasam present ALTAR
Live A/V – World Premiere
ALTAR is a collaboration from Roly Porter and Paul Jebanasam based on a performance of ritual system music. A new approach uniting the technical and creative abilities of two of contemporary music's most powerful composers, this project finds its world premiere in the context of Berlin Atonal 2017.
Powell + Wolfgang Tillmans
Live A/V – World Premiere
This premiere show sees Atonal regular and electronic music enfant terrible Powell on stage performing with Turner prize winning artist Wolfgang Tillmans. The two artists have been collaborating on music which will reach ears for the first time in this live A/V show.
Pan Daijing presents Fist Piece
Live – World Premiere
Chinese performance artist and composer Pan Daijing presents at Berlin Atonal the world premiere of Fist Piece. “I am rubbing my eyes. I am putting it back. I am taking them away. I am stretching. I am holding. I am denying. I am losing."
Roll The Dice
Live A/V – World Premiere
Roll the Dice is the Swedish duo consisting of Malcolm Pardon and Peder Mannerfelt. Pardon is a storied composer of film and television music. Mannerfelt's acclaimed third solo album ‘Controlling Body’ cemented him as in the top handful of creative forces working in experimental electronic music. This theatrical, surprising, world premiere performance cements the two musicians as spearheads of a fractured type of future basement jazz.
OKTOPHONIE Karlheinz Stockhausen
OKTOPHONIE is the 8-channel spatial acousmatic piece composed by Karlheinz Stockhausen as part of his monumental opera cycle LICHT. According to the octophonic system Stockhausen conceptualised the electronic sounds (meant to represent the chaotic soundfield of modern warfare) exist in three-dimensional space, with the audience listening inside a "cube of sound". Berlin Atonal recreates Stockhausen's octophonic set-up on its opening night, for a presentation of OKTOPHONIE projected by long time Stockhausen collaborator and director of the Stockhausen Foundation for Music, Kathinka Pasveer.
Renick Bell + Fis
Live A/V – World Premiere
Renick Bell and Fis link up in search of next-level sonic happenings. Starting with an injection of Fis' gastric, sinuous sound into the cutting-edge expressive power of Bell's live-coded algorithms, their performance plays on apparent distinctions between their live modalities.
Puce Mary presents A Feast Before the Drought
Live – World Premiere
Puce Mary is the solo moniker of Copenhagen based noisenik Frederikke Hoffmeier. Since 2013 she has been invigorating industrial and noise music through the exquisite power of her releases on Posh Isolation and, especially, her transfixing live shows. For Berlin Atonal 2017 she has prepared a brand new live performance entitled A Feast Before the Drought.
PYUR presents Oratorio for the Underworld
Live – World Premiere
Sophie Schnell’s (aka PYUR) newest musical venture Oratorio for the Underworld is a vibrant, fantastical chronicling of the subconscious. As demonstrated in her low-key tardis of a debut album, Schnell’s signature strikes rare balances between familiarity and remoteness bordering on all-consuming, mothership potential, particularly when heard on a full range, sophisticated sound system, such as it will be presented on during Berlin Atonal 2017.
Inga Mauer
Live – World Premiere
Inga Mauer has quickly made a name for herself as an explosive and surprising DJ, honing her craft at the famous Stackenschneider club in St. Petersberg. She has now turned her instinctive taste for industrial, EBM and new wave music into a first live show.
Abul Mogard
Live A/V
With an origin story as enigmatic as the music itself, Abul Mogard seems to have made an impact on everyone who hears his rich and moving work - from Thom Yorke to Rob Booth. Internet sources refer to Abul Mogard as a retired Serbian factory worker but further information is elusive. His bitter tracks trigger a tortuous bliss rarely found in the world of contemporary electronic music. Berlin Atonal 2017 hosts the first ever live performance of Abul Mogard.
Lemna presents Sediment
Live A/V – World Premiere
Lemna is the alias of Tokyo-based producer Maiko Okimoto. She is a regular at underground clubs in Japan, and since she only performs live and never DJs, which has honed her approach to music making. A debut LP for Horo and the premiere live show at Berlin Atonal 2017 will propel Lemna out of the Tanizakian shadows into the international experimental music consciousness.
+ many more to be announced
This is just the first announcement. Further artist announcements as well as individual day tickets will be released on June 29.
